Catholic Spirituality
Clearly “spirituality” is a hot topic these days. It is also clear that there is no single Catholic Christian spirituality. Further, the word spirituality itself needs defining, because it means different things to different people. To demonstrate this, how many times have we heard the following? “I am spiritual, just not religious.” How can one be spiritual and not be religious? Spirituality is much more than intellectual exercise of our minds. Spirituality is lived! Through it one forms a world view, expressed in a way of living, worshiping and connecting to God. Real spirituality is necessarily religious.
To the novice, spirituality, practice and doctrine seem at times to be at odds with each other. But clearly they are not. Doctrine is about what we believe. Spirituality is about relationships with God, ourselves, God’s people and His creation. Catholics have a great spirituality that is reflected in the practice of our faith and supported by the teachings of the Church. If you are looking for black and white doctrine then this page will not help you. Spirituality invites us to live in the tension between absolutes. It should be noted that this website is not comprehensive in presenting Catholic Spirituality. But it will grow over time. For now, this site hopes to provide the reader with a few links and book reviews to give the sojourner food for thought that might lead to contemplation and a deeper relationship with God. |
